New Prohibited Noxious Weed List for BC

I am very happy to be able to let you know that BC now has a “Prohibited Noxious Weed List”. Please find it here http://www.for.gov.bc.ca/hra/invasive-species/Proposed_Prohibited_Noxious_weeds_Feb2012.pdf

What is this list?

The Prohibited list identifies species that are not yet in BC or are in BC in a very limited extent. These species pose a significant risk to our environment, economy and/or human health and have either been found in neighbouring jurisdictions or exist in similar climates. It is important that we all be on the lookout for these species and are therefore familiar with them.

What about species we are actively managing?

This list does not mean that we do not need to be managing other invasive plant species that have been identified as priorities within the region (eg. Knotweed and Giant Hogweed). There are species listed as Noxious Weeds by the BC Weed Control Act that are not on the Prohibited list. See the species on the Noxious Weed List http://www.agf.gov.bc.ca/cropprot/noxious.htm

What if I find a Prohibited species?

If you find a Prohibited Noxious Weed please let us know immediately. These species will fall under BC’s Early Detection Rapid Response program. Learn more about this program here http://www.for.gov.bc.ca/hra/invasive-species/edrr.htm There are two great examples of species successfully treated in our region through this program during the 2011 field season, Garlic Mustard and Phragmites australis. Stay tuned for updates on these species on the province’s website soon.

What will IPCMV be doing to help land managers with the Prohibited Noxious Weed List?

IPCMV will be featuring a few of the species listed as “Prohibited” on each of its newsletters to help familiarize you with these plants. Stay tuned as we will soon be adding a section on these species to our website. We will update you when that is live on the site.
